Why We Choose Every Ingredient in Shampony

Why We Choose Every Ingredient in Shampony

If you've ever turned a bottle around and tried to make sense of the ingredient list, you're not alone.

The horse care world is full of claims about "natural", "chemical-free", "herbal", "scientific", and "advanced" formulas. Somewhere between the marketing buzzwords and the tiny print, it can be difficult to know what actually matters.

At Shampony, we believe there is a simpler approach. We don't choose ingredients because they sound natural. We don't choose ingredients because they sound scientific. We choose ingredients because they help solve real problems for horses. And because we think horse owners deserve to know exactly what they're putting on their horses, we choose to publish our ingredient lists openly.

Natural Doesn't Automatically Mean Better

This may sound surprising coming from a company that uses many plant-based ingredients. Natural ingredients can be wonderful. They can also be irritating, unstable, highly variable, or simply less effective than modern alternatives.

Likewise, an ingredient created or refined through modern cosmetic science is not automatically something to fear. Many ingredients used in horse grooming products today originate from plants but have been purified, refined, or modified to improve stability, performance, or safety.

In our view, the important question isn't: "Is it natural?"

The important questions are:

  • Is it safe?

  • Is it effective?

  • Is it suitable for horses?

  • Does it perform well in real-world use?

  • What happens when it ends up in the environment?

Those are the questions we ask every time we formulate a product.

Why We Publish Our Ingredients

Many grooming products tell you they contain "natural oils" or "botanical extracts". That sounds nice, but it doesn't tell you very much. Which oils? Which extracts? What else is in there?

At Shampony, we'd rather be transparent. We know not everyone will recognize every ingredient on an INCI list, but we believe you should have access to that information if you want it. Whether you're a curious horse owner, a groom, a breeder, a veterinarian, or simply someone who enjoys understanding what you're buying, we think openness is a good thing.

No Fillers, No Fluff: The Shampony Ingredient Philosophy.

Every ingredient must earn its place. When developing a formula, we generally ask four questions.

  1. Is It Horse-Friendly? Horses are not humans. They have different skin, hair follicles and pH levels, different grooming routines, different environments, and an incredibly sensitive sense of smell. An ingredient that works beautifully in a human cosmetic product may not be the best choice for a horse.

  2. Is There Good Reason to Use It? We love tradition but we also love evidence. Sometimes a traditional ingredient has stood the test of time for good reason. Other times, modern cosmetic science offers a better solution. We try to stay open-minded and follow the evidence where it leads.

  3. Does It Work in a Real Stable? Products don't live in laboratories. They live in tack rooms, grooming kits, wash bays, muddy fields, and horse trailers. A beautiful ingredient on paper isn't much use if it doesn't perform when faced with dust, mud, sweat, sunshine, and everyday horse life. For example, castor oil has a lot of beautiful abilities, but attracts dust and dirt if used in too high amounts.

  4. What happens when it ends up in the environment? We favour biodegradable ingredients and naturally occurring materials whenever they can deliver the performance our horses need.

  5. Is It Pleasant to Use? This may seem less important than performance, but we don't think it is. Many of us spend some of the best moments of our day with our horses. Grooming isn't always just about cleaning. It's often a quiet ritual. A chance to connect. A moment to slow down. We want our products to contribute positively to that experience.

A Note About Essential Oils

Essential oils are often treated as either miracle ingredients or villains. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in between. Many essential oils have a long history of use in skincare and grooming products. At the same time, they are highly concentrated substances that deserve respect.

That's why we use them sparingly. Most Shampony products contain around 0.5% essential oils or less. Not because more would necessarily be dangerous, but because we believe in using the minimum amount needed while respecting the horse's skin and sensory world.

Our Philosophy in One Sentence

If we had to summarise our approach in a single sentence, it would be this:

Every ingredient should have a job to do. We do not use filler ingredients.  Just thoughtful formulas designed to make life a little easier for horses and the people who care for them.

Thank you for reading.

And if you're ever curious about why a particular ingredient appears in one of our products, feel free to ask.

We love talking about this stuff.
